Ukrainians were the most religiously persecuted people of the 20th century. Churches were made into museums, speaking Ukrainian was forbidden, having a mass was against the law and having a religious artifact of any kind could get you shot on sight.

My grandmother was deeply religious, laced with some mysticism. When my grandfather told her they'd be escaping, she risked the lives of all of them by secretly carrying an icon. This was no random religious artifact! This icon had been in the family for over 100 years. It had always been passed down to the first daughter of the eldest daughter which meant it was now my mother's. At this time my mother was only 9 years old when they fled their homeland eventually making it to the USA.

In time my mother married and the story goes….

As a child, my religious grandmother taught me about my intuitive self, about dreams and that “dreams can deliver a message”. Pay attention to your dreams, she told me.

These pendants are born from a dream, a message, one that is deep and profound to me. The message speaks to my life's journey, of love and family.

The first is Deer Mother

I love all the seasons and the changes they bring. After the frantic pace of summer and fall, I welcome the cocooning quality of winter. It's a time of rest. A time of quiet as snow falls and we are forced to slow down and to stay home. This is Deer Mother, Winter solstice. She is the “life giving” mother. She led her herd through their winter migration. She was a revered spiritual figure symbolizing fertility, motherhood and rebirth.

Argentium silver, Adularia moonstone surrounded by flush set diamonds and Abyssinian blue chalcedony.

The second is family, the sages, the past, present and future.

Family.

My family, the women of my family.

The women whose shoulders I stand on. They totally embraced their femininity, but not in the weak way our society likes to portray women. Rather they were strong, opinionated women who were comfortable in their skin. They suffered immeasurable hardships that they not only survived, but they thrived as a result of them! They acted in ways that were counter societal, but that was the best decision made for themselves and their families at that moment!

I'm so honored to have their DNA!

Spessartite Garnet, Chrysoprase, argentium silver.

The third is Saraswati. The guardian. She is the goddess of intelligence, consciousness and cosmic knowledge. Her watercourse of knowledge “dispelled all the abysmal darkness of ignorance from the universe”. She is often dressed in white or yellow silk wearing a string of pearls. She symbolizes purity and she is the patron of the arts and sciences.

Opal, South Sea golden pearl, argentium silver.

There are over 200 species of thistle. They range from the humble, that which we call a weed, to the gourmet, an artichoke, but in my opinion they are all beautiful. They are a favorite for butterflies and bees and at the end of summer the little goldfinch enjoy their seeds. It represents many things to many cultures but most agree that it represents bravery, devotion, strength, determination and respect!

When I looked at this chalcedony it said 'Thistle' to me. So I listened and designed a ring that inferred thistle.

What I find fascinating, and humbling is how the right person is always called to a particular piece I make. In this case the fit was exact.

A client struggling with an illness saw the WIP of this ring, it called to get. I know her strength and determination will rule the day. She is one of the strongest women I know. Her character has seen her through many hardships but she has a tender heart. Don't be mistaken, should someone hurt the ones she loves she is a warrior, a fierce protector!

She is a survivor!

She will evolve, transform and in the end she will help others through her own experience with this battle.

She is beautiful, brave, devoted, determined, strong.

She is the Thistle!

When I sketched the design for this pendant 4 years ago, I never thought it would be a year before I could attempt to make it. The diagnosis of Parkinson's for my mom threw my life into turmoil! I became her caregiver. At the same time one of our dogs was dying of liver failure, the other dog was diagnosed with cancer of the toe and Kamala was becoming a chronic egg layer, the layers of stress seemed unbearable! My world was turned upside down! Fiona crossed the rainbow bridge. Feebe had her toe amputated. Kamala has leveled off in her hormones but remains complicated as do the many Drs appointments and medications for my mom, there is no upside to this disease. In time however a new normal settled into place. It wasn't easy by any means, but somehow we got through it. Eventually I was able to go back to my sketch and begin making pro-types of this pendant. After 8 tries,I decided to jump in and just use argentium silver, because at this point I had nothing to lose. Now life is in a turmoil again. Everything has been turned upside down. A new normal is yet to be found but it is making small footholds. The very things that once gave me stress, now give me ease, joy and…… normality. So now, mornings are for my much needed time in the studio, then I bring my mom over. She dozes while I prep dinner. Kamala forages for her food and then sits contently on her 'afternoon' perch. Finally Mom and I do her exercises together and Kamala comes in to watch and be part of her 'flock'. Flock calling follows and mom giggles! Peace inside the turmoil. The very things that gave me undue stress, now bring me a calming state. There is such joy in these simple actions of just being together. Here we are safe and warm and we laugh. It is like cohesion! Cohesion is the surface tension that attracts like molecules together and keeps a drop of water together. We are home, keeping a joyful surface tension by simply being together. In time, this too shall pass. Life continues. We can not change what is happening but we can wisely choose our reaction to it. We can choose to shatter. Or we can choose Cohesion.
